I wonder if the third-party app still works. Look forward to finding out because I love having a little connected program where I can draft stuff and junk.

There used to be, at least! I'm trying to find it but apparently livejournal took it off their website. There's also phone apps, but that's not what I'm after. If/when I find it, I will be certain to let you know.
